New Dwelling
Wenden Cottage, Woolfardisworthy
A new dwelling in the Village of Woolfardisworthy, Torridge. Conceived by the client to act as an exemplar model to demonstrate highly sustainable off grid living. The dwelling would have a number of sustainable and environmental benefits including: renewable heating and hot water systems powered by solar PV, EV charging provision, private water supply, private drainage arrangements using SUDs principles and landscaping and biodiversity enhancements.
The proposed dwelling is located on the site of an existing barn, thoughtfully incorporating the barn’s original stone walls as a defining feature of the design with some small scale modern extensions. Together, the refurbished stone envelope and carefully considered additions create a dwelling that respects the site’s history while providing a functional and contemporary living environment.
Designed to harmonise with its rural surroundings, the dwelling employs traditional forms and locally sourced materials, reflecting the character of the local vernacular. The design sensitively adapts the existing barn structure, preserving its agricultural appearance while seamlessly integrating the building into the wider landscape.
